The presentation prepared by Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences (AFSU) students was awarded at the 12th National Pediatric Hematology Congress.”Do We Forget About Their Healthy Siblings When Dealing With Malignant Children?” titled work prepared by our medicine students Naci Gültekin, Özge Kaya, Esma Kural, Bilge Mumyakmaz, Orçun Öztürk and Nevzat Sakaryawas awarded the special jury prize at the 12th National Pediatric Hematology Congress held in Konya.
Our students prepared a study within the scope of Scientific Research Methods Course, under the supervision of Head of Pediatric Hematology Department Dr. İbrahim Eker. In the study, they examined the presence of depression in the siblings of children with cancer and found that the siblings of children with cancer had three times more depression than the siblings of healthy children.
In the study, which pointed out that there is not enough awareness in both families and healthcare personnel about the siblings of children with cancer, was emphasized that neglecting their healthy siblings while caring for a child with cancer may lead to significant psychological problems that may arise in these children at later ages.
The presentation, was appreciated by both the chairmen and the participants with the performance of our student Özge Kaya, who made the presentationin addition to its subject and content. Moreover it was awarded by the congress award jury for the first time in the 20-year history of the Turkish Pediatric Hematology Association that held the congress.
