Our University Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has taken its place among the few centers in our country with Therapeutic Hypothermia (Cooling Therapy) used in the treatment of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.
Giving information on the subject, Dr. Lecturer Ferit Kulalı said that Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, which develops as a result of the lack of oxygen in the brain, is one of the most serious causes of brain damage in new-born babies. Stating that the body temperature is kept between 33-34 ° C in the cooling treatment (Therapeutic Hypothermia), which is the most effective and only treatment method known today, Kulalı noted that with this treatment method, the neurological problems that babies who are deprived of oxygen can be faced in the future are reduced.
Dr. Kulalı said: “This treatment method has been applied in a very small number of neonatal intensive care unit in Turkey and it was brought to our university with the support of our rector Prof. Dr Nurullah Okumuş, who is Neonatal Intensive Care specialist himself. Neonatology Specialist Prof. Dr. A. Afşin Kundak also contributed greatly to AFSU Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which entered the reconstruction process with the instruction of Our Rector Prof. Dr. Okumuş, in gaining dynamism with its modern tools and equipment and taking its place among the number of neonatal intensive care units in our country.
