First Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Successfully Performed at AHSU

AFSU continues to break ground. The first pediatric bone marrow transplant treatment in Afyonkarahisar was successfully performed at AFSU Health Application and Research Center Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. Speaking at the press conference, President Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş invited all healthy individuals aged between 18 and 50 to donate stem cells.

After providing information about the treatment applied in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Zafer Health Complex, AFSU Medical Faculty Pediatric Hematology Department Head and Therapeutic Apheresis Center Responsible Physician Assist. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Eker said that they shared the rightful joy and pride of successfully performing the first pediatric bone marrow transplant treatment at AFSU. Stating that the studies carried out by using the academic and administrative potential and technical infrastructure of AFSU at full capacity for four years have been crowned successfully, Dr. Eker underlined that besides Afyonkarahisar, the only pediatric bone marrow transplant center among 13 provinces is within the body of AFSU.

After sharing the details of the treatment with the press, Dr. Eker said: “Our 14-year-old male patient, for whom we had a bone marrow transplant, was admitted because of severe low blood values. These low blood values led to anemia symptoms, which caused a serious infection, bleeding, and heart failure. We diagnosed the patient with very severe aplastic anemia such as bone marrow failure, and the only treatment chance was bone marrow transplantation.

First, we scanned the patient’s parents and siblings and found that his 8-year-old brother was fully compatible. To evacuate the bone marrow of the patient, to make room for the bone marrow that we will transplant, and to prevent tissue rejection, we applied an intensive treatment process, which we call the preparation protocol, which takes six days. After this process, under general anesthesia, we successfully transplanted the bone marrow that we collected from the donor’s pelvis to our patient with a procedure that lasted about 2 hours in the operating room.”

After sharing the information that by keeping the transplanted bone marrow, healthy cells start to produce enough on their own, Dr. Eker noted that both the patient and the donor sibling were in good health, and the patient would soon be discharged and followed up on an outpatient basis. Dr. Eker said, “I hope to the head of our seven patients who are waiting for the appropriate time for the transplant or finding a donor.” and thanked his colleagues.
