The books of our faculty members, who continue their scientific studies without interruption during the pandemic process, continue to meet with their readers. The book titled “Diabetes and Carbohydrate Count”, written by AFSU Head of Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences, Assoc. Dr. Nazan Erenoğlu Son and Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Specialist Dr. Osman Son, was presented to the readers. In the book, it is emphasized that the Carbohydrate Counting Method improves the quality of life of diabetic patients.

It is known that one of the important points applied for diabetes mellitus (diabetes), which is a chronic, complex and continuous medical condition that affects carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, which occurs as a result of insulin deficiency and / or ineffectiveness, is medical nutrition therapy.

In the book “Diabetes and Carbohydrate Counting”, the authors stated that there is no one-size-fits-all diet for people with diabetes, so meal planning should be individualized, and point out that the Carbohydrate Counting Method, one of the nutritional treatment methods, has been used worldwide for many years.

In the 116-page book, which includes explanations on the method as well as meal types and food tables, it is stated that the Carbohydrate Counting Method is to adjust the insulin dose during the meal, according to the total carbohydrate content of the meal or snack. In short, due to the low level of protein and fats taken on postprandial blood sugar, this method is based on the fact that carbohydrates are the food group that determines the main insulin requirement in this period.

The authors underline that the Carbohydrate Counting Method, which is recommended for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and those with gestational diabetes and latent sugar, will provide diversity and flexibility in food selection, as well as increase the quality of life in motivated patients due to less blood sugar attacks.

It is possible to buy the book “Diabetes and Carbohydrate Count” with the label of Ankara Nobel Medical Book Stores from the online store of the publishing house.
