Studies that have been carried out meticulously for a long time in the field of Hematology and Oncology at AFSU continue to bear fruit. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş said that they are proud to be able to perform whole body irradiation for bone marrow transplant preparation, which can be applied only in Adana in the Mediterranean Region and only in İzmir in the Aegean Region, but not in the neighboring provinces of Afyonkarahisar.
Following the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant treatments that started in July 2020 and are continuing successfully, Whole Body Irradiation applications that require a comprehensive technological, physical and scientific infrastructure, which is an important stage of the preparation before bone marrow transplants applied for blood and lymph node cancers, are also started to be implemented in AFSU. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş congratulated all university staff who contributed to this issue.
Expressing that AFSU Hematology and Oncology Hospital is on its way to becoming a very important center serving in this area in its region, Prof. Dr. Okumuş stated that their aim is to bring our hospital to Afyonkarahisar and our country’s health tourism as an internationally accredited bone marrow transplant center.
We Work in International Standards
Providing information on the subject, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Lecturer Member Dürye Öztürk stated that Whole Body Irradiation is a method applied only for preparation before bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, and the aim is to eliminate any cancer cells remaining in the patient’s body despite previous treatments and to suppress the immune system.
Noting that this method prevents the rejection of bone marrow and stem cells transferred from the donor to the patient, it also enables the patient to hold onto the bone marrow and start production, Öztürk said: “At AFSÜ, with the technical team consisting of Physics Engineer Özveri Tuğlu and Feyza Savaş Akbulut, who meticulously calculate, calibrate and apply Whole Body Irradiation treatment with Radiotherapy Tech. Ersel Polat and Betül Varol and the leader of the technical team Medical Physics Specialist Faculty Member Dr. Taha Erdogan, with our advanced technological infrastructure, devices, personnel and know-how, we can apply Whole Body Irradiation practices in international standards, minimizing side effects, in the most effective and homogeneous way at the desired dose. “
Reminding that AFSU Radiation Oncology Building has been planned and prepared in such a way that Whole Body Irradiation can also be done architecturally and technologically since the project phase, foreseeing the need for the treatment in our region, Dr. Öztürk stated that they were happy and honored to see that these preliminary preparations were successful.
