Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University’s (AFSU) initiatives to become a world university providing health services at international standards are bearing fruit. AFSU Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, which appeals to a population of approximately 5 million in Afyonkarahisar and its surrounding 13 cities, was accepted as a member of the European Association of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) on the first anniversary of its establishment.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş said that internationalization in higher education is the process of bringing quality to the university’s health services, R&D and social contribution functions. Stating that as AFSU strengthens the profile of a university integrated with the world in the areas it focuses on, it can offer its staff and students the opportunity to improve themselves in many ways and noted that their work on this subject continues without slowing down.
An Important Development in Health Tourism
Noting that bone marrow transplantation was successfully applied to patients at AFSU Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, Prof. Dr. Okumuş continued his words as follows: “AFSU’s application for EBMT membership, with the efforts of the Coordinator of our Center, Faculty Member Özer Öner, Data Manager Faculty Member Dr. Deniz Aşlar Öner and Quality Manager Faculty Member Alperay Girişbay, was evaluated and unanimously accepted at the 47th EBMT General Assembly Meeting.
This success of our center is also an important development in terms of evaluating the capacity of Afyonkarahisar in the field of health tourism, together with the increase in AFSU’s international recognition and research collaborations. With the necessary approvals, we expect that the processes related to our patients who are diagnosed in our hospital and whose treatment is ongoing and who need bone marrow transplantation will be completed without any problems in our center, where studies on the processing, freezing and storage of newborn cord blood are already carried out.
We Expect an Increase in Patient Applications
Our team continues accreditation preparations with JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT | EBMT) for our center to be registered as a world-class treatment center in the upcoming period. With JACIE registration, it will be documented that all treatment services performed at AFSU Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Center are at international standards. Thus, in the coming years, we expect a significant increase in patient applications to our center from all over the world.
In our AFSU Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, which addresses 13 cities in Afyonkarahisar and its surroundings and a population of approximately 5 million, 4 patients have been successfully transplanted in the last year. The processes regarding our 5 patients who need to be transplanted this year are also progressing. We aim to make our center a center that will make important contributions by serving not only in our region, but also in our country and patients coming from abroad. I would like to thank all our members who contributed to this goal and wish them continued success.”
