We Participated in the First Amaranth Harvest in Afyonkarahisar

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş participated in the first harvest event of the amaranth plant grown on an area of 300 decares in Balmahmut village of Sinanpaşa. During the amaranth harvest on the land of businessperson Cengiz Aşkın, AFSU academics Dr. Faculty Member Amir Soltanbeigi, Faculty Member Emre Semiz, Faculty Member Sedef Özliman, Faculty Member Emine Kırbay and Faculty Member Emine Derya Civelek were also present.

Prof. Dr. Okumuş noted that amaranth, whose history dates back to 6,000 B.C. and whose name means “unfading flower” in Greek, is an extremely valuable plant in terms of its high protein content, gluten-free and blood sugar-regulating properties as well as keeping it full with its dense fiber content. Prof. Dr. Okumuş said: “Amaranth is a plant that can be used both to protect health and to treat diseases in terms of its squalene content, which is an important anti-carcinogenic substance, as high as 8% and its unsaturated fatty acids. For example, it has a serious economic value in that it can be included in the diet of celiac patients, that is, its flour is gluten-free.

Amaranth: is a plant that draws attention with its oil being used in the cosmetics industry, its stem being animal feed with its high protein content, and its leaves can be consumed as well. This plant, whose almost every part can be transformed into added value, needs to be given the importance it deserves. As AFSU, we will continue the support we started in the production of amaranth and the laboratory studies needed.”

Businessperson Cengin Aşkın, who introduced the products obtained from amaranth at the stand prepared, thanked Prof. Dr. Okumuş for his support to a precious plant with medicinal value. Stating that they have been experimenting with amaranth for three years, Aşkın stated that they are now harvesting the product they planted on April 17 this year. Expressing his satisfaction for his invitation to the program, Prof. Dr. Okumuş wished Aşkın success and said that AFSU will continue to provide consultancy support to investors operating in the field of medicinal and aromatic plant production.
