The foundation of the Central Education Complex which will be built in the AFSU Zafer Health Complex was laid with the participation of the Afyonkarahisar protocol. Afyonkarahisar Governor Assoc. Dr. Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, Deputy Atty. Ali Özkaya, Supply and Garrison Commander Brig. Osman Alp, Mayor Mehmet Zeybek, Chief Public Prosecutor Fatih Karabacak, Head of Judicial Justice Commission Fatih Serdar Köken, AKÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karakaş, Provincial Gendarmerie Commander, Senior Colonel Yılmaz Kırgel, and the head of the institution, academic and administrative staff, members of the press and many guests attended to the ceremony. The opening speech of the ceremony, which started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, was given by our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş. He stated that they have taken steps to expand the social areas in the complex and meet the increasing need for classrooms and laboratories in order to contribute to the academic and personal development of AFSU staff and students and said that it is essential to bring students and academicians together with the appropriate infrastructure in order for the university to achieve its basic goals.
The Number of Academics and Students is Increasing
Prof. Dr. Okumuş said that the mission of Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University is to raise individuals who can lead in the field of health and are sensitive to the environment and human values and stated that as a health-themed university, he aims to produce, apply and share knowledge with pioneering health research, especially medicine, medical devices, medicinal aromatic plants and thermal health. Dr. Okumuş said: “in our university, where we act with an educational philosophy that focuses on quality rather than quantity, our number of students, which was 5131 in 2018,with our newly opened departments and programs with changed quotas, we have reached 6698 as of 2022 and a 30% increase in the number of students has been achieved. On the other hand, the number of our academic staff, which was 355 in 2018, has reached 556 as of 2022, and a 56% increase has been achieved in the number of academic staff.” Dr. Okumuş referred to the increase in students and academic staff, the existing building and infrastructure began to be inadequate and he gave the following information about the Central Education Complex, the foundation of which was laid: “As of today, we will start the construction of the first phase of the Education Complex Project, which has an indoor area of approximately 43 thousand m² and is planned to be completed in two stages that cover 19.500 m². The first phase is planned to be completed by 2024. The cost of the first phase will be around 130 million TL under current conditions. Within the scope of the project, there are places to be used for educational and administrative purposes of the faculties of Pharmacy, Health Sciences and Dentistry, 34 classrooms and lecture halls with a capacity of 4650 students in various sizes ranging from 80 student capacity to 300 student capacity. In addition, a total of 16 central laboratories, which include general and individual purpose laboratories, Augmented Reality Laboratory, Sound and Image Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratories, Cell Culture Laboratory, Multidisciplinary Laboratories, Computer Laboratory and Microscopy Laboratory, are also within the scope of the project.
Our Permanent Investments Will Continue
Prof. Dr. Okumuş stated that AFSU will carry Afyonkarahisar and our region to a better future with permanent investments and he gave the good news that the foundation of the 100-bed FTR Hospital, which will also serve international health tourism, is planned to be laid before the end of this summer. Prof. Dr. Okumuş said that this hospital has been designed in the comfort of a 5-star hotel, with 20 thermal therapy pools, numerous physical therapy rooms, each with its own bathroom and toilet. Prof. Dr. Okumuş continued his speech as follows: “We have started many permanent investments so far. Our Ömer-Zilif Halaç Palliative Care Center and Guesthouse, the Pediatric Emergency that is under construction, the conversion of Block A to the education units we urgently need, our new operating rooms and intensive care units, our neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, and our pediatric bone marrow transplant center is some of them.” In his speech, Afyonkarahisar Deputy Atty. Ali Özkaya pointed out that AFSU is growing day by day and wished the Education Complex to be beneficial to AFSU and Afyonkarahisar. Özkaya requested support from Mayor Mehmet Zeybek for the pre-school education institution built in Afyonkarahisar State Hospital for the children of health personnel to be built for AFSU as well.
