AFSU Eye Bank started to serve our people with corneal transplant surgeries performed for the first time in our university. The corneal transplantation operation of two patients, one male (78) and the other female (31), was successfully performed. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş said, “Today, our AFSU Eye Bank team successfully performed corneal transplants on two of our patients, with operations lasting approximately one hour. While I wish recovery to our patients, I also congratulate my friends.”

Pointing out that with the AFSU Eye Bank, which has become operational, not only the people of Afyonkarahisar, but also the patients in Uşak, Kütahya and Burdur, where corneal transplantation is not performed, have an attractive alternative for this operation. Prof. Dr. Okumuş said, “Until now, we had to refer our patients who required corneal transplantation to other hospitals, but now we can perform these surgeries ourselves. We welcome all our patients who have to go to other places and cities for cornea transplantation and have to wait in line for a cornea transplant, to AFSU.”

AFSU Eye Bank Medical Director Assist. Prof. Dr. Member İbrahim Ethem Ay said, “The first of our patients for whom we performed corneal transplantation was waiting in line for corneal transplantation in Antalya. Our 78-year-old patient had undergone bypass surgery twice before. At this point, I would like to thank all my teammates as well as our professors in the Department of Anesthesia. We have successfully performed the operation here, for which our patients may have had to wait in line for months.”

Stating that Akdeniz University Ophthalmology Department Head and Cornea Unit Manager Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ünal was present as an observer during the surgeries, Dr. Ay noted that he received both his medical and specialist education at Akdeniz University, which is known for its successful transplant surgeries. Dr. Ay said: “We will establish a model similar to the model at Akdeniz University at AFSU and we will try to help all our patients suffering from transplantation in our region to be healed. I would like to thank our Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş for his vision and endless support for making AFSU a transplantation centre, and our Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Necip Becit and Chief Physician Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ali Tuncer for always being with us.”
