The project led by Dr. Assistant Professor Ozan Kılıçkaya, faculty member of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at AFSU Faculty of Pharmacy, and researcher at Bursa Uludağ University Department of Chemistry, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aslı Göçenoğlu Sarıkaya, has been deemed eligible for support within the scope of the TUSEB (Turkish Health Institutes Presidency) B Group R&D Project Call. The project aims to develop a bacterial production host for the high-purity biotechnological production of the vitamin A molecule in our country.
The project titled “Biotechnological Production of Active Retinol (Vitamin A) in Escherichia coli Engineered by Metabolic Engineering,” led by Dr. Assistant Professor Yunus Ensari from the Department of Biomolecular Engineering at Kafkas University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, received a support amount of 1.5 million TL.
According to the objectives of the project, firstly, the β-carotene production pathway will be transferred to E. coli, and then the enzymes β-carotene 15,15’ dioxygenase and retinol dehydrogenase required for retinol production will be introduced into the system. To increase production efficiency, the retinol dehydrogenase enzyme will also be engineered by a semi-rational approach, and new membrane proteins will be integrated into the system to facilitate the exit of retinol from the cell. Finally, molecularly imprinted polymers will be designed to selectively separate retinol from the production environment, achieving the high-purity production of retinol through biotechnological means.
