At the seminar titled “Pharmacy from a Women’s Perspective,” hosted by AFSU Pharmacy Faculty, Pharmacist Emine Çoban shared both the advantageous aspects of the profession for women through the history of pharmacy in Turkey and informed participants about the research and development (R&D) stages of the sunscreen she developed.
Attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Sarıkürkcü, Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Sevim Feyza Erdoğmuş, Faculty Secretary Yasemin Balta, faculty members, and students, the seminar took place in the Green Hall with Pharmacist Çoban as the guest from Çobanoğlu Pharmacy.
Starting her remarks by emphasizing the strong presence of women in pharmacy, which is evident in all spheres of professional life, Pharmacist Çoban stated that in the beginning of pharmacy education in Turkey, only male students were admitted to schools. She mentioned that records from the Pharmacy School in Kadırga, Istanbul, showed the names of female students starting from 1922. Pharmacist Çoban noted that the first woman to enroll in pharmacy education, registering with number 226 in 1924 but later leaving the school, was Ayşe Saadet Hanım.
Pharmacist Çoban explained that Fatma Belkıs (Derman) Hanım, Fatma Bedriye (Siren) Hanım, and Ayşe Semra (Erçin) Hanım, who enrolled in the Pharmacy School in 1927, were the first female pharmacists to graduate in 1930. She added that in the following years, the number of women receiving pharmacy education increased significantly.
Describing the reasons why women choose pharmacy, Pharmacist Çoban referred to various studies. She stated that advantages such as flexible working hours in independent pharmacy allowing more time for family and social life, as well as financial satisfaction, are among the important factors in the selection of this profession by women.
In the seminar’s final segment, our guest Pharmacist Çoban discussed how they determined the content of the sunscreen cream they developed and introduced to the market. She also explained the stages of branding, including how the patent application was made, and elaborated on how the product was marketed on which platforms and in what manner.
During the last part of the seminar, our guest addressed questions from our students regarding the criteria used to determine the characteristics of the product developed by herself, the challenges encountered during the production and marketing process, and how a company is established for the purpose of developing, producing, and selling cosmetic products.
Following a draw among our students for prizes, the event concluded with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Dr. Sarıkürkcü, to our guest, and a commemorative photo session.
