AFSU Climate Change and Zero Waste Community’s guest speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murad Tiryakioğlu from AKU Department of Economic Policy, delivered a seminar titled “Cycles and Transformations in the Era of Multiple Crises.”

The event, held in the Blue Hall, was attended by AFSU Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr. Cengiz Sarıkürkcü, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism, and Climate Change Fikret Karalar, President of the Afyonkarahisar Chamber of Environmental Engineers Birol İnan, AFSU Head of Health, Culture, and Sports Department Filiz Özden Yılmaz, and our students.

Dr. Tiryakioğlu emphasized that multiple crises not only lower individuals’ quality of life but also affect the business world, endangering the sustainability of businesses. He noted that crises, including economic downturns, high inflation, unemployment, migration, international instability, fluctuations in exchange rates, alongside climate change, have deeper impacts.

Drawing attention to the fact that approximately 75% of terrestrial areas and 40% of oceans have been severely degraded globally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tiryakioğlu explained that the overconsumption of fossil fuels and land use imbalances lead to deforestation and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, thus deepening the climate crisis.

After introducing the story and scope of work of the non-profit social cooperative Yerli Yeşil Yeni, which he founded, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tiryakioğlu, the students of Dumlupınar Science and Art Center, presented various TÜBİTAK projects related to zero waste and recycling.

The event concluded with a special music performance in commemoration of the March 18 Gallipoli Victory and Martyrs’ Day, the presentation of a gift to the guest speaker, and a group photo session.
