A ceremony took place at Zafer Health Campus, where the foundation stone of AFSU’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (PTR) Hospital was laid, and the Pediatric Emergency Service and Pediatric Clinics were inaugurated. Speaking at the ceremony, which saw broad participation from Afyonkarahisar’s local government, Rector Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş stated, “The establishment of the PTR Hospital at AFSU will not only ease access to services but also contribute significantly to Afyonkarahisar’s vision of thermal health tourism.”
The event was attended by key figures such as Afyonkarahisar Governor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, Afyonkarahisar Members of Parliament Atty. Ali Özkaya, Atty. İbrahim Yurdunuseven, Dr. Hasan Arslan, and Atty. Hakan Şeref Olgun, as well as representatives from various public institutions and private sector leaders.

During his speech, Prof. Dr. Okumuş highlighted the continuous support AFSU has received since its foundation, both locally and in Ankara. He expressed his gratitude, particularly to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the benefactors who contributed to the newly opened facilities.
He also noted that the Pediatric Emergency and Clinic building was made possible thanks to the contributions of businessman Yavuz Kocaşaban. He added that the opening of the Medical and Culinary Mushroom Production Facility, originally planned for the same event, would be held at a later date to accommodate the presence of the Minister of Industry and Technology.
Discussing AFSU’s educational goals, he mentioned the university’s significant achievements, including its 61 departments and programs operating at full capacity, with a total of 7,742 students currently enrolled. He also pointed out a 62% increase in academic staff since 2018, reflecting the university’s growing success.
AFSU has been recognized in several prestigious rankings, such as the 8th place in the 2023 Dentistry Specialization Exam (DUS) among 91 universities across Türkiye and the TRNC. In addition, AFSU climbed from 68th to 10th place in the 2023 Türkiye Satisfaction Survey in the “Learning Experience Satisfaction” category.
AFSU was also ranked 31st among 92 Turkish universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings and took the 1st spot among Turkish state universities established in the last decade.
A Strong Momentum in Research Projects
AFSU has made significant progress in external research projects funded by organizations such as TÜBİTAK, NATO, and TÜSEB. In the realm of university-industry collaboration, AFSU signed 73 agreements worth 573,000 TL and has 17 ongoing clinical research projects with a total value of 38,443,000 TL.
Prof. Dr. Okumuş shared updates on AFSU’s healthcare services, emphasizing the university’s efforts to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside Afyonkarahisar by strengthening its academic staff and improving physical conditions. He pointed out that AFSU has become a top choice for various specialized treatments, including cardiology and orthopedic surgeries.
In terms of specialized services, AFSU has established a Cornea Bank, eliminating the need for cornea transplant patients in Afyonkarahisar to wait for treatment. AFSU is now one of the top three centers in Türkiye for cornea extraction and has even started providing corneas to other regions.
AFSU’s hospital, which serves as a regional facility, has a total of 655 beds, including 103 intensive care beds, and 20 operating rooms. Over the past year, the hospital provided services to over 656,000 patients, with 111,600 inpatient admissions and 45,842 surgeries performed.
Prof. Dr. Okumuş announced the upcoming opening of several new facilities, including the Kozmetic Dermatology Practice and Research Center and the Traditional, Complementary, and Functional Medicine Practice and Research Center. A state-of-the-art Bioavailability Bioequivalence and Phase 1 Clinical Research Center is also set to open soon.
The construction of the Central Education Complex, with a total area of 43,000 m², continues at a fast pace, and the first phase is expected to be completed next year.

AFSU’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital, with 108 rooms and a capacity to accommodate 200 beds, will feature 20 therapy pools and 30 different therapy units, making it the first and only hospital of its kind in Türkiye.
Prof. Dr. Okumuş concluded by expressing his appreciation for the support from all those who contributed to the construction of the new facilities, emphasizing the importance of the Pediatric Emergency Service and Pediatric Clinics in providing high-quality healthcare services to the children of Afyonkarahisar.
In closing remarks, Afyonkarahisar Governor Yiğitbaşı praised AFSU for its rapid growth and success in becoming a leading institution, both nationally and internationally. She highlighted Afyonkarahisar’s potential as a health center and the importance of the new PTR hospital in advancing health tourism in the region. She also stressed the need for all institutions to become more child-friendly and expressed her belief that the newly opened Pediatric Emergency Service and Pediatric Clinics would meet a significant need in the region.
