Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş was born in 1972 in Aydın, Çine. He graduated from Hacettepe University in 1995 and in 2000, he became a Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist at Ankara Dr. Sami Ulus Gynecology, Child Health and Diseases Hospital. Okumuş, who was a neonatology specialist at Gazi University Medical Faculty in 2005, worked as an observer doctor in the department of Neonatology in Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston-USA) in 2006. Dr. Okumuş received the title of Associate Professor in 2010 and Professor at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University in 2015. Currently, he is a faculty member of the Health Sciences University.
Dr. Okumuş has published more than 150 scientific articles in his field, 121 of which are in international and 33 in national refereed journals. He has made more than 10 guest speeches in international scientific congresses and over 50 speeches in scientific congresses at national level. Dr. Okumuş also has many national and international papers. Dr. Okumuş has worked as a translation editor in 2 books and a chapter writer in 3 books, 2 of which he has edited.
Dr. Okumuş has many certificates in his field, as well as he has 5 awards; in 2008, “Wyeth, XV. Medical Research Award, Observational Research Group, 1st Prize”, in 2010, 2014 and 2015 “Turkish Neonatology Association, Best Research Award in Newborn Field” and “The International Neonatology Association Conference (INAC), Oral Presentation”.
Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş worked as the head physician and hospital manager at Dr. Sami Ulus Maternity and Child Health Education and Research Hospital between 2011 and 2016. He led the hospital to be among a few leading hospitals in the field of child health and diseases in our country and to provide especially the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit services at the level of developed countries. In cooperation with the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue Team, he actively took part in the project about the rehabilitation and treatment of children lying in the hospital with the help of dogs (animal therapy) in order to increase the morale of pediatric patients, relieve their pain by drawing their perceptions in other ways, help their treatment, and give patients love of animals. In addition, he developed and implemented music and fairy tale therapy projects in cooperation with Gazi University in the hospital.
Prof. Dr. Nurullah Okumuş worked as the General Manager of Healthcare Services in 2016-2017. He served as the General Manager of Healthcare Services; as a member of the Specialization Board in Medicine and Dentistry, the Specialization Board in Pharmacy, the CoHE Quality Board and the Health Professions Board. He was involved in planning studies for the second term of health transformation. He took part in many projects such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) screening, BAHAR, USES, TÜRKÖK and genetic diseases. He collaborated with CoHE, Ministry of National Education and OSYM on education curricula, needs planning and job descriptions of healthcare professionals.
The founder and president of the Premature Baby Coalition (PremaTürk), Dr. Okumuş has served as a management and advisory board member of Turkey’s National Pediatric Association since 2014 and as a member of Turkish Neonatology Association management board since 2016. Having served as a member of the High Health Council between 2015-2018 and as the representative of the Ministry of Health in the Advertising Board of the Ministry of Commerce between 2016-2018, Dr. Okumuş was appointed as the Rector of Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences while serving as a member of the Health Policies Board of the Ministry of Health in 2018. Dr. Okumuş, married with children, speaks English.
